Climate Change Champions

THE FUTURE IS FORESTRY!

As Ontario upholds some of the world’s best forest management practices, the Ontario forestry community is undoubtedly, a climate change champion. The OFIA supports Ontario’s desire to move towards a low carbon economy as our sector has taken a leadership role in lowering its carbon footprint. The OFIA members are leaders in low carbon production and energy generation, producing a wide range of products using Ontario’s renewable and sustainably managed forests, as well as diverting significant amounts of waste from landfills via use of recycled feedstock.

“In the long term, a sustainable forest management strategy aimed at maintaining or increasing forest carbon stocks, while producing an annual sustained yield of timber, fibre or energy from the forest, will generate the largest sustained climate change mitigation benefit” (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report: Climate Change 2007: Mitigation of Climate Change).

When it comes to reducing greenhouse gasses and sustainable resource use, forestry is quickly gaining recognition as holding enormous potential. The carbon stored in wood remains stored in the products manufactured from our forests – construction studs, paper packaging, window frames, doors and flooring in your homes and businesses, can last decades or even centuries. In the meantime, trees that are harvested are replanted and continue the cycle of accumulating and storing carbon as you use the products already harvested.

We are proud that Ontario Wood is among the best-managed natural resources in the world. On top of that, wood is the only building material that is both renewable and recyclable. With such a great and sustainable resource in our own backyard, there are plenty of reasons why Ontario Wood is the natural choice.
