Growing a stronger, greener Ontario
Midway Lumber Mills Ltd.Midway Lumber Mills Ltd.

Midway Lumber Mills Ltd. is a family-owned business located in Thessalon, Ontario. Established in 1948, it has since been joined by two sister companies—Birchland Veneer (in 1965) and Birchland Plywood (in 1975). Together these mills employ 250 people.

Each year, Midway produces about 18 million board feet of lumber. The company gets about 50% of its fibre from land it holds under license with the province, and buys the rest on the open market. Located at the edge of the boreal forest, Midway is able to make use of a wide range of species—including maple, birch, oak, white pine, red pine, jack pine and spruce. It has created niche markets for softwoods, such as white pine panelling and jack pine decking. Spruce is made into boards and shipped to companies that supply the general public. Midway's market is concentrated in Canada and the United States, with a particular focus on Toronto, Montreal and the Michigan "autobelt"—from Chicago to Detroit and Grand Rapids.

Birchland Veneer manufactures two to three million board feet a year, with about 30% continuing on to Birchland Plywood for finishing. The veneer and plywood operations supply distributors in Ontario and Michigan, plus additional points in the western and southern United States.

Midway offers year round public tours of its mills.
