Herb Shaw and Sons Limited

Herb Shaw and Sons Limited is a family-owned company located in the Ottawa Valley near Pembroke. It was formed five generations ago, in 1847, by early Scottish settlers who began with a water-powered lumber and grist mill on the Snake River.

Today the company produces softwood and hardwood lumber, primarily red and white pine, and specializes in a range of pine panelling. Since 1927, it has also made hydro poles—initially from cedar but now mostly from red pine. It has produced an estimated two million poles to date, for domestic use and export, with sizes that range from 23 to 80 foot lengths.

In addition to the land it privately owns, the company receives fibre from Crown land in the area, through agreements held with the province. With so many years in business, the Shaw family recognizes the importance of both sustainable forestry practices and ongoing research. To this end, the Shaws have dedicated 120 acres of old growth forest for scientific study. The stand is a mixture of hardwood, white pine and hemlock, and is to remain undisturbed.
